Our Story
The Realization of a Dream
The Meron Winery was a dream of our family for many years. It was born out of a vision to build upon the ancient tradition of cultivating wine in Israel. So, in 2004, as a family, we set out to find the perfect location for our boutique winery.
Having raised our children in Meron, among the beauty and intense spirituality of these hills, we focused on finding an estate in the Upper Galilee. After extensive research, we selected 120 acres (500 dunams) in the foothills of Mount Meron. This is the place where the Book of the Zohar was written, the foundation of Kaballah, and next to the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, the most visited religious site in Israel after the Western Wall in Jerusalem.
An Ancient Tradition
On the same mountain as our vineyards, an amazing discovery was made, the remains of a Jewish settlement were unearthed that contained wine presses dating back more than 2,500 years. This region was famous for supplying olive oil and wine to the Second Temple that stood in Jerusalem. With the guidance of Israeli veteran winemaker Arkadi Papikian, we revived this ancient tradition, and began cultivating grapes with a goal of making world class estate grown wine in Israel. We are committed to the highest standards and ensuring the consistency and unique character of our flagship wines.
We are also committed to keeping the Shmita year, also known as the Sabbath or Sabbatical year. As defined by Jewish law, Shmita requires leaving all fields fallow every seven years. No work is done to the vines or the vineyard for a full year. In addition to fulfilling the Biblical requirement, this allows the vineyards to rest and acts naturally, without us grooming or adjusting the growth of the grapes. The grapes of the seventh year are not sold and not manufactured into wine. It’s a concept that is hard to understand for some, but something that we believe gives us tremendous blessing. The next Shmita years begins in September 2021, with the onset of the Rosh Hashana holiday.
Limited Edition Wines
Our vineyards are a testament to hard-work and family values. We cultivate Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Syrah and Shiraz varietals as well as white grapes, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer.
In our vineyards, we focus on quality, not quantity, carefully pruning to achieve the highest quality grapes available. While we sell our grapes to some of the most prestigious wineries in Israel, including Carmel, Dalton, Yaron and Tabor, our own production is limited to only 5,000 bottles. Each vintage a limited edition. All bottles are numbered.
Several of our wines have been awarded gold medals and gained international acclaim, including Chateau, Domain and Jermak. While we are humbled by the success we have been able to achieve in a relatively short amount of time, we cherish most the feedback we receive from customers around the world.
From our family to your family. We hope you enjoy our selection of red wines from the Land of Israel and look forward to hearing from you
