In the book of Deuteronomy, also known as<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Devarim, the fruit of the vine is listed as one of the seven species by which the land of<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Israel is praised.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Wine was also used in the Temple service in Jerusalem. There are many biblical laws<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">involving wine and Jacob blessed Judah with an abundance of wine. There are also many<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">references to wine throughout the Talmud, which is a detailed discussion of Jewish<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">religious law and theology.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Recently, The Israel Antiquities Authority discovered in the outskirts of the town of Yavne,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">located south of Tel Aviv, an ancient winery dating back 1,500 years. Amongst the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">discoveries were five huge wine pressess, four warehouses and even kilns for producing<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">wine jugs.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>No Water, No Problem<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Wine in ancient times was consumed for several reasons, not just simply for pleasure.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Wine was used in Israel as part of religious ceremonies, as a source of nutrition as well as<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">a safe source of hydration, since water sources were often contaminated. Israeli wine was<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">also known to be exported to Rome during the Roman period.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The year 630 c.e. (common era) marked a new era of Muslim control in Israel,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">accompanied by the disappearance of viticulture in Israel. Intoxicating substances,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">including wine, are prohibited under Muslim law, thus limiting grapes for the sole purpose<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">of eating.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Between the years 1099 and 1187, Israel was under the rulership of the crusaders,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">allowing a temporary return of viticulture. However, Muslim rule returned and wine<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">production again stopped.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Israel\u2019s Wine Revival<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">In the 19 th century, as more Jews returned to Israel, the need for wine in religious<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">ceremonies increased. A resident of the Old City of Jerusalem, Yitzchok Galina-Shor, saw<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">a need for a commercial winery. Fortunately, his brother in-law had obtained the necessary<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">liscense from the Ottoman goverment required for a winery. They became known as the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Shor Brothers.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The Shor Brothers winery opened in the year 1848, located in what is today the Muslim<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">quarter of The Old City of Jerusalem on Haggai Street. Interestingly, the back wall of the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">wine cellar was the Western Wall of the Temple Mount, which is the holiest place in the<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">world to the Jewish people. The Shor brothers decided to line up the barrels adjacent to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">the wall, as a reminder not to touch the wall. Grapes were obtained from local markets and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">the wine was sold in small barrels.<br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">In 1870, the Mikveh Yisrael School of Agriculture opened in the city of Jaffa.<br \/>Run by <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Charles Netter, the school was opened to educate young Jews with the goal of making the\u00a0 desert bloom and establishing farming villages all over Israel. Amongst the school grounds <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">were vineyards and two great wine cellars. <br \/>This was seen as the return of viticulture to <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Israel. The school focused on the development of European varietals, whose cuttings were<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">eventially used to plant the vineyards in the city of Rishon LeTzion.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Israeli Wine Industry Today<\/strong><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Many credit a French Baron as the person who started the modern Israeli wine industry. <br \/>In <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">the 1880\u2019s, Baron Edmond De Rothchild generously sent money for the purchase of lands,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">economic development, education and health care. <br \/>Already the owner of the winery <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Chateau Lafite in France, Rothchild sent his own experts to help develop a winery in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Rishon LeTzion in 1882, the Carmel Winery. Carmel is still around today. In fact, it\u2019s the <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">largest producer of Israeli wine. <br \/>Rothchild also helped opened a winery in Zichron Yaakov, <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">a town named for his father, on the southern side of Mount Carmel in 1889. <br \/>Originally <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">varieties from the Bordeaux region of France were grown.<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">About 100 years later, in the1980\u2019s, the Israeli wine industry began to boom, as production<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: #333333;\">greatly increased and quality winemakers from around the world came to Israel to share <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">the most up-to-date technology and techniques.<br \/>Israeli winery quickly became known <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">outside of Israel, winning international awards and gaining many loyal customers. <br \/>Today, <\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\">there are about 300 wineries in Israel.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Israel has a long history with wine, basically dating back to the very beginning.Wine is mentioned many times in the Bible.
